After the cold, dry winter months, your skin can use some serious TLC to prepare for the summer. Here are four simple steps to take to ensure that your skin is ready for some fun in the sun!
After enduring the drying winter months, it's likely that your skin has some excess dead cells. It is important to exfoliate 2-3 times weekly to remove the layer of dead skin and reveal the vibrant skin that is hiding underneath. In addition to contributing to a dull appearance, dead skin cells also cause clogging, which can lead to acne and other blemishes. So, no matter what, exfoliate!
Once you have exfoliated and rid yourself of those dead skin cells, it's imperative that you moisturize to ensure that your skin's moisture barrier is not compromised. Exfoliating can be very drying, especially if you happen to over exfoliate or have sensitive skin. Combat dryness with a lush moisturizer that features natural oils and butter.
3. Use SPF 30+ from head to toe
SPF 30+ is a must year-round, but it is especially important during the summer when you are more likely to be exposed to direct UV rays. Sunscreen is the top anti-aging product and sun damage can lead to dark spots and irreversible hyperpigmentation. It is recommended that you reapply your sunscreen every two hours for maximum protection.
4. Stay hydrated
Summer can be very dehydrating. It's important to remember that all of your organs require water. Well, unfortunately, the skin is often the last organ on the list to receive hydration if there is not enough to go around. Be sure to drink water in excess to ensure that your skin is hydrated from the inside out.
